3 5 respiration bigpicture

Cellular respiration as the transfer of electrons from food molecules (or other high-energy electron donors) to the electron transport chain via NAD+/NADH. Electrons flow down the electron transport chain to a terminal electron acceptor, generating a proton gradient across the membrane. The proton gradient and resulting proton motive force powers ATP synthesis (oxidative phosphorylation).
